Built Oregon: What Fuels Startup Week (and every week)

In the startup world, liquid refreshment is often the fuel that gets us through the day. From a double espresso in the morning, to a pint in the late afternoon, and on to a cocktail in the evening. So as we kickoff Portland Startup Week, join us as we hear from founders and brewmasters of local craft beverage companies as they talk about the business behind the liquids we drink.

Topics to include:

  • Challenges and opportunities in the craft beverage world
  • The innovation behind creating new products/styles
  • The importance of storytelling - from product names to the process behind each
  • Lessons learned and advice for the next wave of craft beverage founders/makers

Moderator: Kirsten Ringen - Community Engagement & Education Manager, Northwest Food Processors Association

Panelists:

  • Whitney Burnside - Head Brewer, 10 Barrel Brewing in PDX
  • Ted Pappas - Founder, Big Bottom Whiskey
  • Aidan Currie - Founder, Swift Cider
  • Tressa Yellig - Founder, Salt, Fire & Time  & Broth Bar
  • Ian Williams - Founder, Deadstock Coffee

  • … and more

FailPDX

FailPDX will be kicking off the new year with a 4 person panel discussing the trials and tribulations of building a successful business. Each panel member will share their personal failures, what they learned from the experience, and answer any questions we may have. This FailPDX event is officially part of Portland Startup Week. Startup Week is a free, five-day celebration of our community that builds momentum and opportunity around entrepreneurship. The week is led by local entrepreneurs and hosted in amazing spaces all over town.

For those who may not be familiar with our group: FailPDX was created out of direct response to a lot of the meetups and conferences that seemed to be focused on all of the good things about being part of startup and taking chances. The truth is, success is a unicorn. FailPDX was created to remind people that failure is inevitable. This group is a place where everyone can come together to listen and share their failure stories.

If you are interested in speaking at or sponsoring one of our events, please email talk@failpdx.com.

Schedule:

  • 5:00 PM: Refreshments & Networking
  • 5:30 PM: Presentation followed by Q/A
  • 6:30 PM: Wrap things up

Please note the above schedule is subject to change and will include our panelist closer to event time.

Look forward to seeing everyone!

Hack Oregon Community Summit, Project Season Kick-Off and Design Thinking Session

A Design Thinking Session with Developers, Designers, Government, Industry and Donuts

Hack Oregon opens its doors twice a year to assemble interdisciplinary focus teams of volunteers to build open-data resources on important themes in Oregon. Our projects take roughly three months to complete, and there are staggered start times for different roles within our build cycle.

This is a special event to brainstorm goals, build relationships, and create a shared vision for the next cycle of projects.

At the Summit we'll introduce new themes for projects, assemble teams, and collaborate with fantastic context experts and mentors through guided design thinking sessions.

We won't be coding this afternoon, but it's a exciting space for cross-pollination between disciplines while we take the afternoon to collaborate, plan, and constructively brainstorm.

Some of you will get started hacking the following week, and others we'll see 6-8 weeks later when we start the visual and storytelling phase.

Everyone is welcome, and we can't wait to meet you!

PS: Showing up to the Summit is not a commitment to volunteer, but fair warning, after you experience this you might just step through the looking glass and disappear into the data rabbit hole :)

Kindly RSVP at https://donutsummit.eventbrite.com

To be the best prepared, preregister and get in our volunteer hopper at hackoregon.org
